When I turned 50 I was pissed off…Pissed off at aging in a profession where as a woman you become more and more invisible…Pissed off at menopause…Pissed off at having a misogynist, racist, xenophobic President…so I wrote some songs, screamed them out and found some other pissed off amazing women to help me perform these songs…Genital Panic is here.
Genital Panic is a feminist punk phenomenon forged in the furious fire of menopause, Donald Trump, and rampant global misogyny.
Prolific musician Tina Schlieske (Tina and the B-Sides). found herself, at 50 years old, ever more invisible in the music industry, enduring the miseries of menopause, and increasingly enraged by the sexist, racist, xenophobic, Trumpian politics of the day.
And then one day she saw the work of 20th century Austrian visual and performance artist Valie Export. Export’s 1969 performance piece “Action Pants: Genital Panic” was the crucible for Schlieske’s rage, and inspired her to use her musical talents to channel her frustrations into art that was also a political statement and protest.
It was time to make a punk band. Genital Panic was born.
The Austin-based, all-woman band is made up of Tina on vocals, Mishka Westell on bass, Sally Crewe on guitar, Rachel Fuhrer on drums, and Henna Chou on keyboards.
Genital Panic released its debut EP “Pussygrabber” in 2018. Tracks include “Lick my Impeachment” and “Misogyny is Coming to Get Me.”
